The biggest games in the Football League this weekend

It’s FA Cup weekend so there are no games in the Premier League today but there is plenty happening across the Football League. Here are the biggest games from each division:

Championship – Fulham vs Aston Villa

Aston Villa make the trip to Fulham for a huge meeting between the two form teams in the Championship. Fulham have won 5 of their last 6 and haven’t lost since 16th December, while Villa have won every one of their last 7 league games, their last loss coming at Brentford on Boxing Day. The teams sit 5th and 2nd in the table respectively and Villa will look to fortify their automatic promotion place, but with Fulham coming into form at the right time in the season they will hope to close the gap between them to just 4 points. Villa took the first meeting between the two teams 2-1 so Fulham will also be out to avenge that defeat.

League One – Shrewsbury Town vs Rotherham United

It’s top against 4th today in League One as surprise table toppers Shrewsbury host Rotherham. The Shrews have won just 3 of their last 6 and with division big guns Wigan and Blackburn breathing down their necks they cannot afford to slip up much more. Rotherham will prove an extremely tough test as they are in fine form – undefeated in their last 12, winning 9 of them. A 93rd minute winner gave Shrewsbury a dramatic 2-1 victory at Rotherham earlier in the season. Expect a cracker at New Meadow.

League Two – Exeter City vs Mansfield Town

The race for the playoffs in League Two is a tight one, with just 7 points separating 4th and 10th place. Mansfield, in 5th, are also within striking distance of the automatic promotion places and just sit just 3 points behind 3rd place Wycombe. But Exeter will have similar aspirations to avoid the lottery of the play offs – they are currently 8th, but are only 7 points behind Wycombe and have at least 2 games in hand on all teams above them. The meeting at Mansfield earlier in the season ended in a 1-1 stalemate which wouldn’t be the worst result for either team if it was repeated, but both teams will want to take all 3 points and neither team can afford defeat at this stage in the season.
