Over the next 16 weeks we will be previewing two teams a week, as we look forward to the greatest 5 weeks that football has to offer.

How they got there

Third in the South American qualifying group.

Best World Cup performance

Winners 1978, 1986

Group D matches

Argentina vs Iceland -16th June, Spartak Stadium

Argentina vs Croatia – 21st June, Nizhny Novgorod Stadium

Nigeria vs Argentina – 26th June, Saint Petersburg Stadium

One to watch – Lionel Messi

Of course we are going to say the greatest player that has ever lived. After a very brief retirement from international football, Messi drove his team to qualification from what looked like an impossoble position.

With Cristiano Ronaldo now having an international winners medal around his neck, the pressure is now on Messi to finally win big on the international stage.

Reasons to worry – Everyone else

Despite the amount of talent going forward, Argentina are still heavily reliant on Messi. In qualifying they managed just 19 goals in 18 games, of which 7 were scored by Messi.

For this team to stand a chance of winning in Russia, then he will need some help from the likes of Aguero, Di Maria and Higuain.

FMF’s prediction

Quarter final loss to Spain.
